December 18, 2009, Newsletter Issue #48: Tips on Pet Grooming for Hyper Pets

Tip of the Week

Your dog is so hyper it is bouncing off the walls. You hate to take him to a groomer to be professionally groomed because he has to be heavily sedated and is traumatized by the visit, but you aren't sure you can handle grooming him at home. Are there any tips on pet grooming for hyper dogs?

Get the right equipment. Keeping a dog on a regular table is a lot more challenging than keeping a dog on a grooming table with an arm designed to hold the dog's collar. Talk to your vet about using a light tranquilizer or a product designed to calm pets naturally before you groom your pet. Keep sessions short and fun. Use a lot of treats and praise throughout the grooming process. It may take five or six 10 minute sessions to completely groom your high energy dog.
