August 14, 2009, Newsletter Issue #30: Potentially Dangerous Foods for Pets

Tip of the Week

Your new parrot is a wonderful, entertaining companion and you want to help it stay as healthy as possible. Are there any potentially dangerous foods for pets that you should avoid?

Believe it or not, some of the most toxic foods for parrots are foods that seem like they would be quite healthy.

Avocado is deadly to birds and should not ever be fed to your parrot. Strawberries should be avoided if they are not organically grown. Traditional growing methods involve such heavy pesticide and fungicide treatments that the berries could make your new pet quite ill. Peanuts are fine in small quantities, but can lead to obesity and health problems if they are fed in large amounts.
