April 30, 2010, Newsletter Issue #66: Safe Pet Toys for Birds

Tip of the Week

Your bird is very playful and will even try to use two toys at the same time. Because you have such an active and energetic bird, you are really worried about buying safe pet toys. What should you be looking for as you shop for new toys for your bird?

The first thing you should consider is the size of the bird. An African Grey should not be playing with a set of parakeet rings, but this toy is perfectly safe for parakeets or other small birds. On the other hand, small birds may become frightened and stressed when they are confronted with a massive toy meant for an Umbrella Cockatoo.

Next, consider the materials used in the toy. Keep in mind that a bird that has not been banded may be fine playing with a toy that could be unsafe for a banded bird, since bands can become tangled up in some toys.

Finally, think about how the toy fastens to the cage. A secure clasp is essential if the bird will be swinging on or climbing on the toy.
