You're right to think that your pet rummaging through your garbage is an annoyance, but it is also a serious hazard to his health. There are many human foods that we throw away that are simply deadly for pet consumption.
Next time you look in your trash, consider how easily your pet could consume these potentially lethal foods:
- Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, and only a few can kill a dog.
- Chocolate is dangerous and can cause seizures, comas and even death. It is always tempting to give chocolate to pets, but this must be avoided at all costs.
- Nuts, especially macadamia nuts and walnuts, are toxic to dogs and can cause paralysis and kidney failures. The exception to the rule is peanut butter.
- Tomatoes and especially tomato plants can cause heart arrhythmias.
