February 20, 2009, Newsletter Issue #6: Pet First Aid Tips for Hot Days

Tip of the Week

You knew it was hot out, but you didn't realize your beloved pet was overheating until it started to act disoriented. Are there any pet first aid tips for overheated pets?

When a pet is overheated, start first aid by immediately moving it to a cooler area. Encourage your pet to drink some water, but do not give it unlimited access to the water, since your pet could develop an electrolyte imbalance by drinking too much water at one time. If the pet does not rapidly improve, call your vet for emergency assistance, as an overheated pet can turn into a pet with heat stroke if it is not properly treated.
