March 27, 2009, Newsletter Issue #10: Be Safe With Pet Exercise Ideas

Tip of the Week

You saw a man ride by on his bike while his leashed dog ran alongside. It looked like a fun way to get Fido some extra exercise, so you're thinking about pulling out your bike, too. Is it okay to try this pet exercise idea?

While helping your pet get in shape is a great idea, having Fido run alongside your bike is not the best option. Your dog could hurt itself and you if its leash tangled up in the wheels or if it suddenly ran in front of the bike to chase something.

Using equipment meant for people, such as a treadmill, to exercise your pet may also be risky. When in doubt, talk to your vet about your pet exercise idea before you give it a try.
