September 25, 2009, Newsletter Issue #36: What Causes Cancer in Pets?

Tip of the Week

You're concerned about the likelihood of your dog getting cancer and you'd like to find out more about what causes cancer in pets. Is it something you can prevent? Yes and no. The likelihood of your pet developing some types of cancer can be drastically reduced with preventative methods. Other types cannot be prevented.

Several types of cancer, such as malignant skin tumors and mammary gland tumors, are often passed on through your dog's genes. If your dog has one of these cancers in its bloodlines, there isn't much you can do to prevent it from occurring in your pet.

Other types of cancer, such as those caused by your dog coming in contact with a heavy dose of something that contains carcinogens, can be prevented by vigilance and a safe area for your dog to exercise in.
