March 19, 2010, Newsletter Issue #60: Pet Training Guide for New Puppies

Tip of the Week

You have a new puppy and you want to begin obedience training. Is there a pet training guide you can follow?

The first thing a new puppy owner should teach his or her four-legged friend is the come command. This way, if your puppy strays, you'll be able to call it to you. To practice this command, put your puppy on a long lead and sit on the ground with it. Wait for it to move away a bit and then call it back in an excited voice. Give it plenty of praise and attention. Repeat this exercise daily for about ten minutes at a time. Each day, let the puppy get a bit further before you call it back.

Once your puppy has mastered the come command, teach it to sit, to lie down, to stay and to heel. When it has learned all of these commands, you'll have a well trained pet.
