April 2, 2010, Newsletter Issue #62: Training Your Pet With the Clicker Method

Tip of the Week

Someone mentioned using clicker training with his pet. Now, you want to know what it is and how it works. Is training your pet with a clicker a good idea?

Clicker training simply teaches pets to associate the sound the clicker makes with treats or lavish praise. The trainer can click faster than he or she can say, "Good dog!" which makes it easier for the dog to understand which behavior was the one the trainer is looking for. The dog knows a treat or praise is on the way and will work hard to hear those clicks.

This method is great for all types of pets, but is especially good for timid dogs, as it emphasizes positive reinforcement and helps them become more confident.
