February 26, 2010, Newsletter Issue #57: Socialized Dog Training Tips

Tip of the Week

You would like to take your dog to nursing homes and other places to visit people who could use a pet to hug, but you aren't sure whether it is socialized enough to handle the stress and excitement of the visit. Are there any dog training tips that can help you socialize your dog?

First, make sure your dog has the right personality. A very high strung dog that is afraid of its own shadow may never thrive on these visits, while a jolly little dog that greats everyone as a friend will enjoy its time at the nursing home. Once you decide that your dog can handle visits, try these tips for socialization:

Start young. As soon as your pet has finished its puppy vaccines, you should start to take it out and about. Visit a petless friend's house with your dog and have the friend give your pet a favorite treat and lavish praise. When your pet seems comfortable with these visits, try visiting a small group of friends. Consider enrolling in a pet obedience class. This class will help your pet learn to obey commands when there are a lot of distractions.
