January 16, 2009, Newsletter Issue #1: How to Apply First Aid to Your Pet Without Endangering Yourself

Tip of the Week

Having an injured pet can be a scary experience. Many people feel a little panicked when they are faced with the need to administer first aid. If your pet is injured, you may be tempted to rush in and pick your pet up. Don't. Even the most laid-back and well-behaved pet may bite when it is injured. The most important thing to remember as you try to recall how to apply first aid to your pet is that you must protect yourself so you will be able to get your pet the help it needs.

If your pet needs to be moved so that you can take it to the vet for emergency care, never just scoop it into your arms. Instead, carefully restrain it with a muzzle or a towel and then move it to the car. If possible, have someone come along with you and your pet so he or she can help keep your pet calm as you drive.
