January 23, 2009, Newsletter Issue #2: What to do if your pet is poisoned?

Tip of the Week

If your pet ingests a harmful substance, you must know how to give your pet first aid to save his life. Here are some life-saving tips:

Act quickly, but donít panic. This will increase your petís stress and blood flow.Spend 60 seconds collecting any of the materials your pet swallowed as well as any vomit or bodily fluids ejected by your pet. Call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. If your pet is having seizures, vomiting or is unconscious, call the vet and bring your pet over. The vet can call the ASPCA while you are en route.
If you must revive your pet using first aid at home, it is wise to invest in a pet fist aid kit consisting of:
hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting.A turkey baster or syringe to administer peroxide. Artificial tear gel to flush out eyes. Mild dishwashing liquid to wash skin contaminants. A muzzle.A carrying crate.
