December 4, 2009, Newsletter Issue #46: Pet Grooming Tips for Hamsters

Tip of the Week

You have a new hamster and you're wondering if you need to worry about grooming its long hair. It doesn't seem possible to groom something that small! Try these pet grooming tips for long haired hamsters.

Get a small, soft brush. Check your child's toy box for a soft brush designed for dolls or head to the pet store and ask for help. Distract your pet with a special treat, like a bit of apple or a piece of carrot. Gently brush through the hamster's coat at least once a week to remove any debris. If there is a matted area that you can't brush out, ask your vet about cutting it out. As long as it is a small patch that hangs below the hamster's body, your vet will probably simply tell you to remove it.
