Are sticks a good toy for my dog?

Safe Toys for Dogs

Allowing your dog to play with toys is great for his overall heath. It will help fight boredom and discourage destructive behaviors. But before giving your dog any toy to play with, you should make sure it is safe and appropriate for his size and personality. Don't assume that all toys bought in pet stores are safe. Here are a few tips on what to look for in a safe dog toys:

  • The first thing to do is to make sure the toy is appropriate for your dog's size. You wouldn't want to give a little dog a huge, hard plastic toy just like you wouldn't give a St. Bernard a tiny tennis ball.
  • Some toys have small, detachable parts. These are dangerous for all dogs because they can easily be chewed off and become lodged in the dog's throat.
  • It's a good idea to avoid toys with a squeaker because this could encourage your pup to chew through the toy until he finds and swallows the squeaker.
  • Rawhide chews like cow skin and pig's ears are dangerous because they often break off into small, sharp shards that can puncture the gastrointestinal tract.
Always use a safe plastic chew toy to play fetch with instead. To keep your dog safe and healthy, sign him up for the best pet insurance at VPI Pet Insurance.
